Mumbai, Apr 21: In the wake of several controversies related to the cricket series Indian Premier League (IPL), Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray is of the opinion that a ban must be imposed on IPL to 'save cricket'.

"The ongoing controversy involving IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor has maligned the image of the 'gentleman's game'. Ban the IPL to save the game of cricket," he said.

He took the opportunity to launch a scathing attack on the Congress-led UPA government.

If the government cares about the game, then it should ban the BCCI-backed cash-rich tournament, he said.

"What is this Modi, Modi going on. The entire controversy revolves around money so probe all the cricketers involved in IPL-3," the Sena chief and a cricket fan added.

He also raised questions as to how the Mumabi Indians, who have been performing brilliantly from the beginning of the season, lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.

The politician, who is known for his dislike towards Shah Rukh Khan, did not name the Bollywood star when he sought a probe into the match between Reliance Group-owned MI and SRK-owned KKR to see if any betting was involved.

Besides this, he also sought a probe into the owners of the teams who, according to him, have made a lot of wealth through IPL.
