New Delhi, Apr 7: The country's biggest mobile service providers will be coming together and bidding against each other to get their hands in the third generation (3G) airwaves as the auction is set to begin on Friday, Apr 9.

India has earned the reputation of being the world-fastest-growing cellular market making the bidding for the third generation services more crucial for the nine mobile companies.

It also becomes important in terms of competition as the companies would want to offer 3G services to retain and satisfy the high-end subscribers, besides attracting new ones.

The government is hoping to make as much as eight billion dollars from sale of 3G airwaves. The starting price has been pinned at 780 million dollars for pan-India 3G licences.

The top players in the fray are Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar and Tata DoCoMo.
