Women's quota bill has problems: V-P Ansari's wife
Agra, Mar 30: Vice President Hamid Ansari's wife Salma has expressed unhappiness over the Women's Reservation Bill and said that it will not help unless awareness is created among women.
Speaking to reporters Salma said, "I have a problem with this bill. The government comes up with a lot of schemes and many projects but how many women are able to take advantage of these."
She said, "Unless awareness is created among women at the grassroots and they are educated, such legislations will not be of much help."
"Till the time they are not educated, unless they understand that they have to take care of their lives themselves, no matter how many such bills are passed, there will be no benefit to the grassroot-level women," she said.
On Mar 9, the controversial Women's bill providing for 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and assemblies was passed by the Rajya Sabha.
The bill was opposed by parties like SP and RJD which alleged that the measure is unacceptable in its present form.
The bill was adopted in Rajya Sabha only after unruly members opposing the measure were marshalled out.
