New Delhi, Mar 26: The CII has called upon all industries and citizens to render their support to observe Earth Hour 2010.

Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII said, "Earth Hour is an important global event to create awareness on climate change and also send a strong message that climate change requires collective action."

"It is projected that India will be one of the worst affected as a result of global warming. CII and its members not only recognize the gravity of the challenge, but also are committed to tackling it," Banerjee said.

He further said, "It is with this conviction that CII supports the Earth Hour and requests all businesses and citizens to join the campaign."

Earth Hour is an initiative where citizens around the globe show their support for action on climate change by turning off lights for one hour.

This year the switch off is being observed from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm, on Mar 27, 2010.

In 2009, five million people in India alone switched off during the Earth Hour. Fifty six Indian cities participated in the campaign. India saved 1000MW of power in that one hour with 600MW of energy saving in Delhi alone.

"As responsible citizens of this planet, it is extremely crucial for us to address the colossal problem of climate change through ensuring responsible action and adopting a sustainable way of life," Banerjee added.
