New Delhi, Mar 15: The Supreme Court on Monday, Mar 15 dismissed the bail plea of Ramalinga Raju, the main accused in the Satyam Computers scam, citing that he may influence the witnesses.

“When serious crimes are committed, people are bound to be in jail," the apex court bench said.

Headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan, the bench comprised of Justices Deepak Verma and BS Chauhan.

The bench also brushed aside the argument on Ramalinga Raju's health ailments noting, “He (Raju) is also getting proper medical treatment."

The court made it clear that Ramalinga Raju can not be released until main witnesses in the case are examined and said that he could file a bail plea later when all the main witnesses are examined.

Raju's counsel S Andhiarjuna told the bench that Raju has been in jail since Jan 2007 while several others involved in the scam including senior auditors have been released on bail.

The trial court has to examine 671 witnesses and peruse 1.60 lakh documents which would extend Raju's stay in prison, the court was told.
