Lecturer kills 3, including Indian in US shootout
Birmingham, Feb 13: In a gruesome incident of personal vendetta, three people were killed and one injured when a lecture fired rampantly in the campus of University of Alabama at Huntsville, a University spokesman and police said.
" We have three confirmed people who are dead, one injured. The police have secured the building. The shooter is in custody," UA-Huntsville spokesman Ray Gardner told local television.
It has been reported the suspect was a female University lecturer who was upset at being denied an extension of tenure and had informed about her intention just an hour before taking the heinous step.
The shooting took place just before 4 pm local time at the University's Shelby Center, media report said.
"I heard three shots and screaming," said Melanie Gates, an engineering student at the campus.
Gates, who was standing near the exit, added that she heard the gun shots which seemed to be coming from the third floor where a biology faculty meeting was taking place.
The slain Indian lecturer has been identified as Gopi K Podila, chairman of the department of biological sciences in the University.
The authorities have closed down the university after the shoot-out.
