Amravati, Feb 10: In a development that may forever mar the image of President Prathiba Patel, her husband Devisingh Ransingh Shekawat has been asked to return a piece of land that he allegedly snatched from a farmer.

The farmer, identified as Kishor Madhav Bansod, has reportedly filed a land grabbing suit against Shekawat and seven others.

Shekawat has been accused of grabbing as much as 2 acres of the farmer's land with help from local revenue officers.

As per reports, Daryapur court has ruled in favour of the farmer and has directed the president's husband to return the land to the farmer, who, it has been found, is the rightful owner.

Shekawat is a member of Indian National Congress and has also served as the mayor of Amravati.

Digging up Sekhawat's dark part

This is not the first time Sekhawat is facing criminal charges.

In Nov 1998, a teacher committed suicide after naming Sekhawat in this suicide note. Kisan Dhage, who was a teacher in a school run by Vidya Prasarak Mandal in Buldana district, reportedly accused Sekhawat of mental harassment and named it the reason behind his death.

Following this, Shekawat was undergoing criminal proceedings on charges of abetting the school teacher's suicide.

The issue is now pending in High Court as two lower courts have already rejected Shekawat's plea seeking dismissal of charges.

In 2002, Shekawat again came under the scanner when the shareholders of the Amravati People's Co-operative Bank, which was started in 1982 in Prathiba Patil's name, claimed that he stood guarantor for a loan taken by Sriram Rolling Mills, which was defaulted. And it was found that the address of the rolling mill was listed as Shekawat's Amravati residence.
