Sensex ends above 17k for 1st time since May 2008

Mumbai, Sep 30:At 4:07 PM, the Sensex closed above the 17000 mark for the first time since May 2008.

Metals, auto, realty, capital goods, IT, power and oil & gas stocks witnessed strong buying interests.

The Sensex ended up 274.97 points at 17127.88, and the Nifty closed up 72.40 points at 5079.25.

Top gainers on the Sensex were SBI, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Sterlite Ind and M&M.

However, top losers on the Sensex were ONGC, ITC, Grasim and Bharti Airtel.

Stocks like Axis Bank, Oriental Bank, SBI, IOB and ICICI Bank rose by 5 to 6 per cent.

Meanwhile, Financial Tech, Wipro, Patni Computer, TCS and Oracle Financr rose from 1 to 5 per cent.

AIA Engineering, Bharat Elec, Elecon Eng, Jyoti Structure and BHEL surged from 2 to 10 per cent.

Torrent Power, BHEL, Neyveli Lignite, ABB and Tata Power increased by 1 to 5 per cent.

In the metal space Jindal Saw, Jai Corp, Sterlite Ind, JSW Steel and Hindalco increased by 2 to 5 per cent.

Oil & gas stocks like Aban Offshore, Reliance, BPCL, HPCL and Cairn India were up by 0.31 to 2.58 per cent.

Nifty at 5050 mark; SBI, Infy gain

At 12.44 PM, the Sensex maintained the 17000 mark while the Nifty hovered around the 5050 mark.

Stocks like Reliance, Infosys, ICICI Bank, L&T and SBI were the major contributors to the bourses while HDFC, ITC, NTPC, ONGC and GAIL were the negative contributors.

Banks, metals, IT, capital goods, oil &gas, realty and auto witnessed buying interest.

Top gainers on the Nifty were SBI,Sterlite Ind, Reliance Comm, HDFC Bank and Wipro.

Top gainers on the BSE Midcap were Dishman Pharma, Asian Star, Parsvnath, HMT and Anant Raj Ind increaing form 5 to 14 per cent.

Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap were Ashtavinayak, KLG Systel, Dhampur Sugar, Dolphin Offshore and ITI, which rose by 10 to 15 per cent.

Most active shares on NSE were Oil India, Reliance, Axis Bank, SBI and ICICI Bank.

Sensex up at 17 k; oil, IT, realty rise

At 11:43 AM, the Sensex traded above the 17000 mark.

Buying interest was also seen in banks, IT, oil & gas, capital goods, power, realty and pharma stocks.

Reliance, Infosys, ICICI Bank, SBI and BHEL positively contributed to the Sensex.

The Sensex was up 174.39 points at 17027.30 and the Nifty was up 49.20 points at 5056.05.

Top gainers on the Sensex were Sterlite Ind, SBI, Tata Steel, Hindalco and Sun Pharma.

However, top losers on the Sensex were NTPC, Tata Motors, ITC and HDFC.

Top gainers on the BSE Midcap were Parsvnath, Asian Star, Aurobindo Pharm, Anant Raj Ind and Dishman Pharma.

Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap were Ashtavinayak, KLG Systel, Dolphin Offshor, Apar Ind and Dhampur Sugar.

12:30 PM

Sensex begins lukewarm; realty stocks trade weak

At 9:55 AM, the Sensex was around 16900 mark with weak realty stocks.

However, pharma, oil & gas, banks, power and capital goods stocks witnessed buying interest.

Nalco, Sun Pharma, Ranbaxy, Jindal Steel, Sterlite, TCS, Cairn India were major gainers.

However, DLF, ITC and HDFC lost.

The Sensex was up 165.36 points at 16858.36 and the Nifty was up 39.15 points at 4998.10.

Asian markets saw mixed trade.
