Raj: Gujjar sit-in on ST status demand

Jaipur, Jul 27: The Gujjar community of Rajasthan on Monday, Jul 27 started Mahapanchayat or a grand sit in demanding for a Scheduled Tribe status for reservations in government jobs.

Led by Kirori Singh Bainsla about 4,000 members of the community gathered at the Penchla-mod ground amid tight security.

ADG (law and order) Navdeep Singh said that was no report of any untoward incident so far. Prohibitory orders under section 144 are in force since Sunday, Jul 26 in Karuali and adjoining districts of Sawaimadhopur, Dausa, Dholpur, Bharatpur and parts of Jaipur rural.

Apart from this, Personnel of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary, Rapid Action Force, riot control, STF have been deployed in the areas in case any untoward incident sparks off.

Bainsla who has been leading the agitation for three years called on the Gujjars. He asked the gathered people to stay back overnight for a 24 hour sit in.

The community is demanding for five per cent reservation from the Congress. This was a provision in the bill passed by the previous BJP government.
