New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): The Government on Tuesday rejected Bharatiya Janata Party MP Varun Gandhi's plea for more security following threat from an underworld outfit.

According to sources, Varun Gandhi currently has a special Y category protection, which includes three Police Services Officers (PSOs) round the clock, one escort and pilot vehicle, and after several evaluations the arrangement was found sufficient.

Government also dismissed Maneka Gandhi's allegation in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the Home Ministry had adopted a "lackadaisical" approach to threats to Varun's life.

Maneka in her letter, had referred referred to the arrest of seven alleged associates of underworld don Chhota Shakeel who had apparently come to Delhi to kill an advocate who had taken up Varun's case in the hate-speech incident.

However, the Home Ministry officials said that proper investigation was conducted and the seven arrested by the Delhi Police were questioned separately during which it was clear that they had come to kill a lawyer, who was among the one representing Varun's case in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said it was common sense that no group will gain anything by killing only an advocate but even if it was so, it was a serious matter.

"Varun Gandhi is an honourable member of this House (Lok Sabha) and the youngest MP from our party. A notorious underworld group has decided to kill him," she said, demanding to upgrade Varun Gandhi's security. (ANI)
