First batch of H1N1 vaccine ready: Novartis

Basel (Switzerland), Jun 12: Novartis AG, the Swiss pharmaceuticals company on Friday, Jun 12 said that it has successfully produced a first batch of Swine flu (H1N1 influenza) vaccine weeks ahead of expectations.

The announcement came a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared swine flu, a pandemic. Novartis said that the first batch of the vaccine would be used for pre-clinical evaluation and testing and also for clinical trials.

Novartis said that the Marburg plant in Germany were the vaccine was produced could potentially produce millions of doses of vaccine in a week. Its second plant is being built in Holly Springs, North Carolina.

The company said that more than 30 governments have requested vaccine supplies.
