India deploys additional troops along China border

Written by: Staff

Tezpur, Jun 9: Two army divisions, and a squadron of frontline Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat jets have been deployed by India along the Indo-China border, according to a military source.

In an effort to strengthen its military deployment along the sensitive northeastern border, India has positioned 25,000 to 30,000 personnel strong army divisions and has placed a squadron of Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat jets at a key airbase.

Besides this, the country has inducted first of the three airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) aircraft. This will help in monitoring the movement of troops and aircraft in Chinese territory.

"Hitherto, the Indian defence establishment's focus had been on Pakistan but there is a growing realisation that we cannot ignore China's growing military might and its ability to quickly move troops and equipment thanks to the railway line it has built up to Lhasa," a top military official quoted as saying in a news agency report, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official added that even though the two countries had put their disputes behind, there was a sudden realisation in India that it needs to keep an eye on China.
