No need for independent probe into Indian student attacks: Gillard
Canberra, June 3 (ANI): Australian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday said that there is no need for an independent probe into the recent attacks on Indian students living in Australia.
Talking to a news channel, Gillard said, "I think the best course of action for the time being is to let the Victorian Police go ahead with the investigation. The Victorian police are working closely with the Indian community to identify the attackers."ccording to the Victorian Police, the attacks were not "racially" motivated, she added.
However, Gillard assured that Australia is a safe country for the students.
The Australian Government has set up a special task force to coordinate Australia's response to the violence against Indian students.
The taskforce includes senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Attorney-General's Department and the Departments of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, and Immigration and Citizenship. (ANI)
