Rehabilitate Lankan Tamils immediately: Jaya
Chennai, Mar 21: AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa on Thursday, May 21 asked the Centre to urge Sri Lanka to start immediately the rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts in Sri Lanka.
In a statement released Jaya urged the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to raise his voice in Delhi for the Tamils. She said that since the decades-long war has officially come to an end, the Lankan government should open up the war zones to the International Red Cross and other international relief agencies.
"The UN and various human rights agencies should be allowed free access to assess the ground situation first hand and the international media, which has been totally gagged for several years now, should be allowed to independently visit the war-ravaged areas rather than be taken on military-sponsored, embedded excursions," she added.
She also said that India should not shy away from its responsibility.
