Inflation rises to 0.61pc due to pricey food items

New Delhi, May 21: India's inflation rate has risen to 0.61 per cent for the week ended May 9 from 0.48 per cent the week before, official data reveals.

The official data released by the commerce and industry ministry on wholesale prices on Thursday, May 21 showed that the higher prices of tea, fruits, vegetables and spices pushed up India's annual rate of inflation to 0.61 per cent.

Data showed that the index for primary articles rose 0.5 per cent during the week and that for manufactured products was up 0.1 per cent, while the index for fuels remained unchanged.

Despite the decline in the rates of urad, barley and maize during the week, the sub-index for food articles rose 0.6 per cent. The sub-index for non-food articles 0.4% as raw cotton, raw silk and oil seeds turned pricey, while prices fell for raw rubber.

The annual rate of inflation had been rising for four consecutive reporting dates since the week ended Apr 4.
