Yangon, May 14: The Myanmar opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was taken to Yangon's notorious Insein Prison on Thursday, May 14 to face charges for allowing a US national John William Yethaw to visit her house where she has been under detention for 6 years.

The 1991 Nobel peace prize winner, Suu Kyi, was asked to attend a trail in Insein Prison involving herself, her maid, her doctor and Yethaw, who swam to her house on Inya Lake and spend 3-days there before swimming away. Sources revealed that Suu Kyi could face a jail term in Insein for allowing the unauthorised visit.

Aung Din, executive director of the US Campaign for Burma said,"This is the cunning plan of the regime to put Daw (Mrs) Aung San Suu Kyi in continuous detention beyond the six years allowed by the law they (the regime) used to justify (her) detention".

Suu Kyi, daughter of Aung San, an assassinated independence hero, was kept under complete isolation for past six years and was only allowed occasional visit by her doctors and UN special envoys.

Yethaw, 53, was arrested on May 6, when he swam away from Suu Kyi's house.
