New Delhi, May 10: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s new poster boy Varun Gandhi on Saturday, May 9 denied that he favoured forced sterilisation policy after his party distanced itself from his reported remarks on the issue. Earlier there were reports in Daily Telegraph of Varun favouring the controversial policy which was initiated by his late father Sanjay Gandhi.

In a statement issued in New Delhi, Varun said, "I categorically deny having stated in an interview to Dean Nelson of the Daily Telegraph that I am in favour of forced sterilisation. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nor have I made any mention of reviving any previous sterilisation programme or policy," he said.

The newspaper, however, has not published a direct quote on Varun Gandhi's reported pledge to revive population control policies that were implemented by Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s, in many cases by force. However Varun's party categorically distanced itself from alleged remarks and said it is the Pilibhit candidate's personal view. Varun had earlier courted controversy with his communal speeches and was jailed by the UP government.
