London, Apr 21 (ANI): The British Police is investigating allegations of racist abuse against the newly crowned Miss Black Britain. Nigerian-born medical student Helen Lawal (23) from Pickering, North Yorkshire, was threatened in a phone call to event organiser Vivienne Lee.

The caller contacted the beauty contest boss after Lawal won the competition earlier this month, The Telegraph reports.

He allegedly complained about the Nigerian-born winner competing and made a series of racist comments about "these people being allowed into the country."

Lee, 52, informed North Yorkshire Police of the call, from the man who called himself "Mr Paver," and is now worried about the safety of Lawal, who will compete in the Miss England contest in July.

Lee said: "A man with a Yorkshire accent called me to say there shouldn't be a black person representing York and he said he would get all of us."

"He said the winner should have been indigenous to this country and she should not have been eligible for it because she was born in Nigeria. He added that I was an absolute disgrace for letting a black girl win. I tried to explain to him the eligibility rules that as long as you have a British passport you can enter," Lee said.

Although Lawal was born in Nigeria, she came to the UK as a toddler and has a British passport.

Her father Mustapha is a surgeon in Africa and her mother Sue, a nurse, is white and lives in Yorkshire.

Lawal herself is a medical student at the University of York-based Hull York Medical School

North Yorkshire Police said it took the allegations "very seriously". (ANI)
