Maruti to bid goodbye to M800, Omni

New Delhi, Apr 1: Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) is all set to phase out Maruti 800, the peoples car which revolutionised personal transport in modern India by 2016, the year in which India is expected to take up new emission norms.

Along with Maruti 800, MSI is also planning to bid goodbye to its second oldest model, the utility van Omni.

"Once Bharat Stage-IV emission norms (equivalent to Euro-IV emission norms) is applied across the country, which is likely to happen around 2015-16, then M800 and Omni may not be a saleable product. We will have to eventually phase (them) out then," MSI Chairman R C Bhargava said. He also said that MSI is not planning for a replacement for the two models.

The company is planning to stop sales of Maruti 800 and Omni in 11 cities next year, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore where Bharat Stage-IV would come into effect. Maruti suzuki was launched in 1983 and the company has sold about 27 lakh units in its 25 years.
