Written by: Staff

Dharamshala, Mar 10: Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader said China has launched a 'brutal crackdown' in Tibet during 2008 protests. He was delivering the annual uprising day statement to mark the golden jubilee anniversary of the failed revolt by Tibetans against the Chinese government 50 years ago that sent him into exile.

A special prayer was held at Tibetans' main temple at Mcleodganj, near Dharamshala to all the Tibetans killed inside Tibet and also others still subjected to 'Chinese atrocities' and to mark the 20th anniversary of the imposition of martial law in Lhasa. Dalai Lama said that the Tibetan culture and identity are nearing extinction and people of Tibet are regarded as criminals.

"These 50 years have brought untold suffering and destruction to the land and people of Tibet," he told the crowd who gathered to mark the day. The Tibetan spiritual leader urged the China to provide 'greated autonomy' to Tibet within Chinese rule to protect its unique Buddhist culture. However China accused him of leading a campaign to split the region from the rest of the nation.
