Puri, Mar 8 (ANI): Thousands of devotees took a holy dip here to mark a unique auspicious occasion known as 'Govinda Dwadai', which incidentally has taken place after 48 years.

Reportedly, such a rare combination in Hindu almanac last occurred in the year 1961.

"Anyone who takes a holy dip today would be blessed by the almighty. I have come here to offer prayers," said Pratima Dash, a devotee.

Devotees were excited to take a holy dip on this particular day, indeed a rare one as per Hindu astrology and almanac.

The district administration had made all arrangements to ensure security to more than 800 thousand pilgrims frequenting Puri.

"We have made elaborate arrangements so that there is no difficulty," said M M Praharaj, Director General of Police, Bhubaneshwar.

It is believed that a dip just after dawn on the day of 'Govinda Dwadasi', wipes out all the sins.

On the day of 'Govinda Dwadasi', devotees converged at the Mahodadhi Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu to offer prayers.

According to the Panchang (Hindu almanac), 'Govinda Dwadasi' is an auspicious day that falls on the 12th day during the waxing phase of the moon in Phalguna month.

The day is considered highly auspicious by the worshipers of Lord Vishnu. (ANI)
