India requires 2 crore jobs in 2009: ILO
Manila, Feb 18: Around 72 lakh more Asians will be jobless by end of 2009 due to global recession raising the jobless rate to 5.1 per cent, said International Labour Organisation (ILO) on Wednesday, Feb 18. The ranks of unemployed workers would increase to 9.7 crores in 2009 in Asia. Last year, the unemployment rate was 4.8 per cent.
In most pessimistic scenario, the number of unemployed could swell to 11.3 crores, or 2.23 crores more than last year, the ILO said in a report on the crisis' fallout in Asia.
To meet this crisis of unemployment, an estimated 5.1crore new jobs will be needed this year and next. The most number of jobs are required in India- 2.03 crore, China-1.09 crore and Indonesia- 36 lakh.
