India's first oceanarium to be set up in Kerala

Kochi, Feb 17: Kerala, the land of God's own country can now boost of India's first oceanarium to be set up in its state. This project has been taken in a bid to promote 'fisheries tourism' and to enable people and researchers to study marine species, including large one like whales and sharks.

This would give to have a clear perspective about their habitat at a closer level. A proposal with Rs 350 crore to set up oceanarium has been initiated by Kerala govt. The first of its kind in the country, this proposed project is spread over 50 acres at Puthuvypeen in Ernakulam District and will be set up on a public-private partnership model.

It is expected to be launched by 2010, Kerala minister for fisheries, S Sarma said.

What is Oceanarium?

An oceanarium is a simulated ocean and contain all living organisms found in the water body including large species like whales and sharks.

Those who visit the oceanarium, would definitely feel the spectacular water world. They can feel of walking on the sea bed. The main tank is meticulously planned to reflect the various aspects of the world beneath the ocean. Reef, rock and weed structures are reproduced to create a pleasant environment and a natural habitat for the marine species that will make it their home, he said.

Apart from commercial activities, the oceanarium will tie up with various universities and research centres in India and abroad to facilitate opportunities to do research projects in Marine biology and biotechnology, advisor to the fisheries minister Madhusoodhana Kurup said.

Varies species if marine organisms collected from all over the world like corals, reef and underwater caves will be set up.

The important area of the oceanarium complex will be its main tank through which marine life could be viewed from close range. The tank will have the capacity to hold around 12,000 cubic M of seawater.
