Mumbai, Feb 5: The Bombay High Court on Thursday, Feb 5 has struck down the appointment of A N Roy as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra.

The High Court termed DGP's appointment as contrary to law. It has asked the govt to appoint a new DGP within four weeks.

A Division Bench headed by Chief Justive Swatanter Kumar upheld the Central Administrative Tribunal's (CAT) order and also issued strictures against the state for not following the law.

The ruling by the Bombay High Court has come after a petition was filed by Chakravarty, a 1972 batch IPS officer saying that Roy was promoted out of turn.

Chakravarty had challenged Roy's appointment contending that as per the Supreme Court's directions, the three senior most officers should have been considered for the post, and Roy being junior to Chakravarty, S S Virk and J D Virkar, should not have been considered.

As per the CATs order, state erred in not considering S S Virk among the three senior most officers.

The government now has to decide between S S Virk, J D Virkar and Suprakash Chakravarty.
