Chennai, Nov 26: Life became miserable in Tamil Nadu after heavy rains accompanied by gusty wind lashed out in several parts of the state continously for the fourth day. So far 20 people have succumbed to the heavy lash.

The low pressure which has intensified in to a cyclonic depression over the Bay of Bengal resulted in the heavy rains bringing the traffic in Chennai city to a standstill as many roads are under knee-deep water. A holiday is declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur by the district officials. Officials have warned the fishermen not to venture into sea as strong onshore winds with maximum speed reaching 45-55 km is likely to sweep along Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during next 24 hours.

The torrential rains have claimed at least 20 lives in the last four days, besides causing extensive damages to the standing crops. Most of the victims were either electrocuted or killed in wall collapse. Fresh deaths due to wall collapse were reported from Kodaikanal, Tuticorin and Cuddalore since Tuesday, Nov 25 evening.
