Rs 2.5 cr to renovate Tagore hall in Kashmir

Srinagar, Nov 17: 'Tagore hall', the nostalgic destination of the artists and the art lovers in the Kashmir valley, presently in a dilapidated condition, will be renovated at a cost of Rs 2,50 crore.

Jammu Kashmir Governor N N Vohra visited the famous Tagore Hall here and discussed its renovation plan with the top ranking officers and engineers.

Concerned over its condition, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, besides various cultural organizations have been representing the Governor for restoring it to its pristine glory.

During his visit to the complex, the experts of the Kashmir theatre briefed the Governor about their requirements and sought intervention for taking up the renovation plan on urgent basis.

The Governor discussed various issues, pertaining to the elevation, seating, stage and lighting settings and acoustics with the secretary Works, Shalindra Kumar and Managing Director, Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation, Dilip Thusoo and asked them to undertake consultations with expert and well known theatre architects.

The project is likely to cost Rs 2.50 crore.

Mr Vohra suggested for raising the base-level of the Hall, constructed in 1961, as the area gets water-logged even after minimal rainfall.

He asked the Jammu and Kashmir Project Construction Corporation (JKPCC) to ensure the renovation work before the end of April next year so that the theatre activities take place during the summer months in full swing.

The Governor also visited the old and the new Legislature Complexes in Srinagar and went round the various blocks.

He particularly appreciated the wood work of the new Legislature Complex and took keen interest in the heritage aspect of the old Complex.

Mr Vohra also went round the Central Library in the old Legislature Complex.
