Bangalore, Nov 15: Chandrayaan-I, ISRO's unmanned moon voyager, on Friday, Nov 14 night successfully placed the tri-colour on the Moon's surface at exactly 2031 hrs as per schedule, heralding a new chapter in India's space technological prowess.

Overwhelmed ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair said, ''We have successfully placed the National Flag on the lunar surface. We released the MIP close to the pole and exactly where we wanted at Shakelton crater, this surrounds a mountain range. Now, we have onboard a camera on the MIP and it is taking pictures.'' Chandrayaan spacecraft is, at present, behind the Moon and it will come to the Earth's side in two hours and send the photos taken by the MIP. ''All vital instalations are performing very well. The Moon has been very favourable to us as it was 'Karthika Month'' (an auspicious month in Hindu religion) and it was the birthday of late Jawaharlal Nehru, which is really a great gift to children on Children's day,'' he said.

For former President and Scientist A P J Abdul Kalam, who flew here specially to witness the occasion, it was a great day.

''It is a great day for India and for me. I saw the MIP being released at the exact time. I also saw numerous data already sent by Chandrayaan-I,'' Dr Kalam said.
