Uphaar Tragedy: Ansals to surrender before Court

New Delhi, Sep 11: The Ansal brothers, Sushil and Gopal Ansal who were sentenced to two years of imprisonment by the trial court in the Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy are ordered to surrender on Thursday, Sep 11 by 4 pm. The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, Sep 10 cancelled the bail of Ansal Brothers the construction giants, saying their role in destroying court records in the Uphaar fire tragedy case was an enormous offence.

The Ansals were sentenced to two years in jail but then given bail by the High Court. Now, lawyers have said that if they are convicted on the charge of destroying evidence, they will face up to seven years in jail. The apex court also cancelled the bail granted to Ajit Chowdhary and Nirmal Chopra, managers of the theatre, who were awarded seven years of imprisonment. The order was pronounced by a Bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and G S Singhvi. It ordered them all to surrender before the trial court at the Patiala House by 4 pm on Thursday, Sep 11.
