Patna, Sep 2: The flood situation in Bihar showed slight improvement on Tuesday, Sep 2 as the water level of the turbulent Kosi, which brought the catastrophic floods in north Bihar, was receding gradually.

The flood water receded by one to three feet in the affected districts of Madhepura, Purnia, Supaul, Saharsa and Araria as the tributaries of Kosi were maintaining a receding trend.

Meanwhile, the rescue operations continued with renewed vigour after the decrease in water level as Army personnel were now able to enter the remote areas to evacuate the trapped people.

However, even though the water level had reduced slightly, about three feet flood water was still flowing in the region.

A report from Madhepura said the flood situation had improved slightly in 11 blocks of the district. Nearly ten lakh people of Shankarpur, Murliganj, Kumarkhand, Udakishunganj, Madhepura, Sadar, Gwalpada, Bihariganj, Chausa, Alamnagar, Urani and Singheshwar were still in the grip of floods. About two to three feet water was still flowing in Madhepura town.

Besides, 40 lakh people trapped in the floods needed immediate evacuation.

Meanwhile, the administration prohibited plying of heavy vehicles on National Highway 107 connecting Maheshkhut and Saharsa as the flood water was flowing on the highway.
