New Delhi, Jul 21: BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday, July 21 demanded that the nuclear deal be scrapped, saying it was not in the national interest.

The proposed civil nuclear energy pact with the US would do no good to the country, so the process for making it operational should be suspended till a new government was in place, she said addressing a press conference here as the Lok Sabha started a debate on the trust vote of the Manmohan Singh government on the issue of the deal. "Elections are approaching, so let the next Government take a final decision on the deal,'' said the BSP supremo.

She claimed that the deal would put severe constraints on the country's policies and decisions and would make it a "slave" of the United States.

Ms Mayawati felt that the deal would come in the way of Pakistan-India gas pipeline project as the US was acting against Iran in a "dangerous" manner.

Replying to a question on the fate of the Manmohan Singh Government, she said the voting on the confidence motion would certainly result in the fall of the Government.

''By tomorrow evening when the voting is finished, the Government will have gone,' she said.
