Chennai, June 3: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to name the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) as ''Sethu Ram'' and ensure its implementation. Mr Karunanidhi made this appeal to the Prime Minister and urged him to implement the project in the name of ''Setu Ram,'' when Dr Singh spoke to the octogenarian leader over phone to greet him on the occasion of his 85th birthday today. The DMK patriarch thanked the Prime Minister for greeting him on the occasion.

AICC President Sonia Gandhi also greeted Mr Karunanidhi over phone from New Delhi. Mr Karunanidhi's appeal to the Prime Minister comes two days after he penned a poem, in which he made an emotional appeal to Hindutva forces, not to sabotage the project in the name of Lord Ram and even favoured naming the project as ''Setu Ram,'' and said this was his appeal on the occasion of his birthday.

While addressing the DMK General council meeting, the highest policy making body, yesterday, Mr Karunanidhi exhorted the party workers to be prepared for a massive agitation, even if it meant losing of power, for the implementation of the SSCP.

The General Council also adopted a resolution, appealing to the Centre to implement the project without any delay.
