1993 Mumbai blast: SC stays another death sentence

New Delhi, May 13: The Supreme Court today stayed the death sentence of a convict in 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case. A bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices R V Raveendran and M K Sharma, stayed the death sentence of Parvez Nazir Ahmed Shaikh, who had planted RDX loaded scooter in Katha Bazar in South Mumbai, killing four people and injuring 21. He had also planted an RDX loaded two-wheeler in front of Searock hotel, Bandra, Mumbai.

The apex court also issued notices to CBI on his appeal against his conviction and sentence by a TADA court, Mumbai. The apex court has till now stayed the death sentence of seven convicts in the case. Two hundred innocent lives were lost and hundreds were left injured in a series of bomb blast that rocked Mumbai on March 12, 1993. The conspiracy was allegedly hatched to settle score for demolision of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in December 1992.
