Jammu, May 7: A newly married girl allegedly committed suicide following harassment for dowry. The deceased identified as Bharti Sharma, resident of posh Gandhi Nagar locality, on the intervening night of May 5 and 6, consumed poison at her parental house. She was immediately rushed to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu, where she died early this morning, a senior police official told the sources.

The deceased entered into a court marriage with one Dimple Singh Sambyal, resident of Mandi Kotli in Samba district in July 2007, police said.

''The deceased was in love with Dimple Singh and they got married against the wishes of their parents,'' police said adding that she (deceased) later stayed in her in-laws house, who accepted the marriage.

However, after six-months of their marriage, her husband alongwith other family members started harassing her for dowry and also used to assault her physically, police said (according to Bharti's parents).

''The deceased left her in-laws house and was living with her parents for the past one month. Despite her several attempts to return to her in-laws residence, she was not allowed to enter without dowry and that forced her to take an extreme step,'' police added.

''On the complaint lodged by the deceased's parents, Dimple Singh (husband) has been arrested for abetment to suicide and cruelty towards his wife,'' a police official said.
