Chennai, Jan 21: AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today demanded the resignation of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, owning moral responsibility for the death of 15 cows at a goshala at Rameshwaram temple due to starvation.

Expressing shock and grief over the death of over 15 cows at the goshala maintained by famous Ramanathasamy temple at Rameshwaram due to lack of fodder, the AIADMK leader in a statement here blamed the DMK government for not providing fodder to the cows and demanded its resignation.

If the Chief Minister failed to step down, the Centre should take steps to sack the DMK government, she said.

She said it was the responsibility of the state Hindu Religious and Endowment Board to ensure that the temples, which maintained goshalas, get adequate funds to provide fodder to the cows, donated by the devotees.

The reports that 15 of the 55 cows maintained at the goshala had died due to lack of fodder and many were in a serious condition were disturbing, Ms Jayalalithaa urged.

The veterinary doctors, who had examined the dead cows, had said they died of starvation and not due to any disease, she said adding, ''the DMK government is not even fit to take care of the cows donated to the temples.'' Alleging large scale corruption in police, the AIADMK leader said the law and order had deteriorated and farmers were struggling to get farm loans.

''Neighbouring states mock at the DMK government for power cuts and bad roads,'' she alleged adding that the DMK government had lost the moral right to rule the state.
