TELC to build cathedral at its premises in TN

The
Tranquebar
House,
headquarters
of
the
Tamil
Evangelical
Lutheran
Church
(TELC),
will
have
a
cathedral
on
its
premises
in
a
year.
At a colourful ceremony here last night TELC Bishop, Rt Rev T Aruldoss laid the foundation stone for the Rs 2.5 crore building in the presence Tiruchi Diocese Bishop Most Rev Antony Devotta and former Bishops. With a plinth area of 75 x 75 feet, the cathedral has been designed to convene meetings of the Synod, general body, pastoral conferences,annual conventions and retreats, TELC Advisory Committee Secretary E D Charles said.
In his address, Mr Charles said while the ground floor will have a meditation hall, Sunday School, quarters for church functionaries, women fellowship and meetings, the first floor can accommodate more than 700 people for worship.
The roof will be 64 feet above the ground and the tower's height raised to 110 feet.
Unveiling the model of the cathedral, State Transport Minister K N Nehru said the DMK Government led by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi would be with the minorities and continue its efforts towards porotecting their interests.
He said Mr Karunanidhi was very keen on the welfare of minorities and hence introduced 3.5 per cent exclusive reservation for them in Tamil Nadu recently City Corporation Mayor Sarubala R Tondaiman hailed the efforts of the TELC in the uplift of the downtrodden and poor.
