Haryana to provide text books, cycles to SC girl students

The
Haryana
government
has
launched
a
scheme
to
provide
text
books
and
bicycles
to
girl
students
belonging
to
Scheduled
Castes
(SC)
in
government
colleges.
Stating this here today, Haryana Education Minister Mange Ram Gupta said under the scheme, a sum of Rs 2.75 crore had been earmarked during the current financial year.
''For providing books to the Scheduled Castes girl students, a sum of Rs 2 crore has been earmarked and as many as 8,909 students would get the benefit of the scheme,'' he said, adding that a sum of Rs 1.95 crore had already been disbursed to the beneficiaries so far.
Under the scheme of providing free bicycles to SC girl students of Government Colleges, a sum of Rs 75 lakh had been earmarked and as many as 4,287 Scheduled Castes girl students would be given bicycles free of cost during the current financial year.
He said a sum of Rs 67 lakh had already been incurred under the scheme so far. Girl students, who would secure 50 per cent or more marks in 10+2 class or in the next higher class would be eligible for the bicycle, he added.
The Education Minister said in order to empower the female students and to create awakening among them, Women Cells had been established in all government colleges in the state.These cells would organise various activities so that the girl students could be informed about gender related issues, the Minister added.
