Volkswagen to sell 1,10,000 units by 2009

New Delhi, Jan 9: Europe's largest automaker Volkswagen AG today said it aims to capture a market share of 10 per cent in the country by focussing on introducing new models and strengthening services here.

''We are looking at selling 1,10,000 cars a year in the country from 2009,'' Jochem Heizmann, Board member (vehicle production) said. The company also plans to launch new cars in the country. ''We will get our Jetta to the Indian market this summer, while luxury sedan Phaeton will also be introduced this year,'' Volkswagen India President Joerg Mueller told reporters at the AutoExpo here.

While, Jetta will be assembled at the Skoda unit at Aurangabad, Phaeton will be imported. The company is also looking at the market prospects for introduction of its SUV, Tiguan.

''The company also plans to introduce a small car in India in 2010,'' Mr Mueller said.

Volkswagen, which sells the Passat Sedan in India, has invested about Rs 2,400 crore to set up a plant in Chakan near Pune.

''The plant will begin by producing Skoda's Fabia model in 2009 and will then build the planned small car from 2010, which will be based on the Polo platform,'' Joerg Mueller, president of Volkswagen's Indian operations said.

Volkswagen also displaying the concept for its small car called UP and the Tiguan sports-utility vehicle.

The company is also planning to expand the network to 10 this year from the current three, Mr Mueller said.

With the passenger vehicle sales in the country expected to nearly double to two million units by 2010, car manufacturers are spending a combined six billion dollars in the country.
