The
Election
Commission
of
India
has
embarked
on
a
mission
to
encourage
students
in
Tamil
Nadu
to
register
for
inclusion
in
the
voter's
list.
Talking to newspersons here last night, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta said the Commision had written letters to the Principals of Colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Alandur, on a pilot basis, to encourage students to file applications. So far, about 6,000 applications were received.
To a query, Mr Gupta said the EC had instructed the Electoral Registration Officers to scrutinise the claims of inclusion/ deletion/ modifications in the voter's list. At least 14.5 lakh applications of such claims, constituting 3.7 per cent of the electorate, have been received across the state during the summary revision exercise.
The CEO said the Commission was keen on avoiding duplication of names in the voter's list. The final rolls would not be published until it was satisfied with the disposal of claims.
