Kolkata, Sept 23: A major fire today broke out in Metro Plaza, one of the city's biggest shopping malls. Fire Brigade sources said no casualties were reported so far as a thin crowd was present following heavy rains since last night.

However, two fire engines were rushed to the spot and the situation was brought under control, fire officials told the sources. ''Short circuit in the transformer might be the reason for the fire,'' officials stated, adding that the exact cause of the fire was being investigated.

Located in the heart of the city, this gigantic complex combines a high degree of artistry with technical perfection. Thousands of people visit the mall everyday.

The Metro Plaza has more than 260 commercial establishments, including offices, covering textiles, apparels, accessories, footwear, perfumes and jewellery.
