New Delhi, Aug 29: The resident doctors today extended to 10 pm the deadline to authorities at AIIMS to hand over the degrees to AIIMS scholars failing which they would go on an indefinite strike.

Earlier, this morning the Resident Doctors association had given a deadline of 5 pm to the authorities to hand over their degrees.

The RDA said the offer by Dr Ramadoss to hand over the degrees by September 25 was not acceptable.

''Mere assurances will not do. We are demanding that the Union Minister immediately signs the degrees so that the doctors can get them,''RDA spokesperson Kumar Harsh said.

The resident doctors have alleged that about 400 AIIMS scholars have not been awarded their degrees for the past two years as AIIMS president and Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has yet to put his signature on them.

The RDA is demanding that degrees of 50 AIIMS scholars whos are to go abroad on September 1 for higher studies in a foreign university should be at least signed as the non receipt of degrees had put their visit in jeopardy.

Consequently, the deadline for handing over of degrees has been extended to 10 pm.

The resident doctors last night carried out a protest march towards Dr Ramadoss' house in Safdarjung Enclave last evening but were stopped at Nirman Bhawan.

Meanwhile, the progressive medicos and scientists forum has dissassociated itself from the hunger strike of senior resident doctors.

''It is surprising that an issue which effects only 6 Undergraduate (MBBS) students of AIIMS is allowed to snowball into a strike by AIIMS administration. Does the premier institute of India need to be shutdown and lives of poor patients put in danger, just because a few doctors (MBBS) who after studying free on government money are not getting their degrees to go to the US.'' All post graduates can still apply for US visa using their MBBS degrees. All MBBS and Post-graduate doctors can practice anywhere in India using the provisional degrees which they have already got,''Dr Kapil Yadav of the association said.

He said the total shut down of AIIMS over this trivial issue (when functioning was unaffected even over death of one of doctors owing to allegation of harrassment) could be explained due to pro-active role played by Director AIIMS and his cronies in Faculty Association.

''They have managed to create a reign of terror and intimidation in campus owing to which no resident doctor dares to go against their wishes,''he said.
