MP: 140 cr proj to bring Narmada water to Khandwa

Bhopal, Aug 1: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said a Rs 140 crore-project is being prepared for supplying drinking water from Indira Sagar dam to Khandwa town.

Mr Chouhan gave the information at a meeting in the Vidhan Sabha's chamber committee here yesterday.

Construction of the project is proposed to begin from January 2008 after completing all the formalities.

Chief Minister's Secretary Anurag Jain would monitor the construction of the drinking water project.

Urban Administration Secretary Malay Shrivastava said water from Indira Sagar dam would be carried to Khandwa through a 52 km-long pipeline.

Ten overhead tanks would be constructed on the way for this purpose.

The cost of the project was estimated to be Rs 98 crore in 2003 and has now gone up to Rs 140 crore.

An 18 km-long pipeline would be laid in Khandwa city for drinking water supply.

The Centre would share 80 per cent cost of the project, while 10 per cent each would be contributed by the state government and Khandwa Municipal Corporation.

Action would be taken for obtaining clearance from the ministries of forest and railways for this project. The maintenance of the project would cost Rs 5 crore annually, a release here said.
