Centre to boost mega polysilicon plant: Chidambaram

Bangalore, Aug 1: Triggered by the growing requirement of silicon wafers for energy requirements and the electronics industry, the Centre will be promoting a 2500 tone polysilicon plant in the country, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Union Government R Chidambaram said.

Speaking at the annual awards function of the India Semiconductor Association (ISA) here last night, Dr Chidambaram said one of the recommendations of the Core Committee on SMT (Surface Mounted Technology) was setting up of such a plant, as manufacturers in Germany, one of the main source for silicon wafers had indicated the huge demand for it.

He said that India which missed the semiconductor revolution could not afford to miss the nano electronics revolution and urged the ISA to keep the momentum in nanotechnology going with a strong participation.

He also referred to the joint Centre of Excellence in Nanotechnology and nano electronics functioning at the Indian Institute of Science here and the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, and said that the project had been taken up with an investment of Rs.100 crore.

Highlighting the galloping progress India was witnessing in the field, he referred to the core group in automotive research set up by the Centre and said the success of this group had led the Machine Tool industry also to seek such a centre to uiplift the stagnant industry. Prof Krishna Saraswat of Stanford University received the first ISA Technovisionary Award, a Life time achievement award for his contribution to the sector. The award carried a prize money of Rs.five lakh.

Prof Jagdish Kumar of IIT New Delhi was awaded the ISA VLSI Society of India TechnoMentor Award for being an academic of extraordinary mentoring and research abilities.

IIT Chennai and IIT Kharagpur were jointly awarded the ISA-VSI TechnoShield Award, given out to an academic institution in India for its contribution in semiconductor research.

National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra and Mr Shyam Sundar Reddy of IIT Chennai, were receipients of the ISA-VSI Technoinventor award for their oustanding post graduate and doctoral research thesis.
