Museum in memory of Kunwar Singh in Bihar

Patna, July 29: With a view to immortalising the rich contribution of Babu Veer Kunwar Singh in the country's freedom struggle, the Bihar government has decided to set up a new museum and name it after him.

The museum, will be (In Bihar district, about 120 km from here) set up at the small town of Jagdishpur where Kunwar Singh was born more than a century ago. It will consists a large number of artefacts, related to the country's long freedom struggle.

Announcing the government plan to establish the ''unique museum'' in a far off place like Jagdishpur, state Urban Development and Public Health minister Prem Kumar said when constructed by next year, the museum would perhaps be the first of its kind not only in Bihar but also in the whole of Eastern and Northeastern regions since there was no museum in any of these states which was entirely devoted to highlighting the glory of the freedom struggle with rich collections.

Also elaborating the state government's plan to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the country's first War of Independence in 1857 in a grand manner, Mr Kumar said a high powered committee under the Chairmanship of Chief minister Nitish Kumar and comprising members from all political parties had already been formed to prepare the blue print of the year long celebrations, beginnig from the next Independence day.

Apart from publishing a number of books on different aspects of the country's long freedom struggle and the role of numerous freedom fighters and many unsung heroes in the realm of history, the government had decided to rename and beautify a number of streets and prominent landmarks in and around the capital city and elsewhere named after the heroes of the war of Independence, the minister informed.

''The decision to set up the Veer Kunwar Singh museum in his hometown is a part of that celebration besides being a sincere effort on our part to pay homage to his rich contribution in India's unforgetiable war of independence,'' Mr Kumar said adding that a total amount of Rs five crores had been earmarked for establishing the museum.

About the artifacts to be displayed for general public in the proposed museum, the minister said a detailed list was being prepared for submitting to the high power committee for clearance and applying to different institutions and other museums to part with them for a greater cause.
