Bhopal, July 21: The two-day conclave of Hindu saints and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leaders scheduled at Delhi from July 25 will finalise the agitation plan against the demolition of the Ram Setu off Rameshwaram coast for the Setu Samudram project, VHP Secretary General Pravin Togadia said today.

Dr Togadia, who took part in a VHP meeting here, told newspersons that the UPA government's decision granting permission for the demolition of the heritage site hurt Hindu sentiments It was also detrimental to the country's security strategy as the canal would pave way for the movement of warships of the US and Pakistan close to Indian coast, he said.

He contested the government's claim that opening of the Setu Samudram canal would help curtail distance on the Kolkata-Mumbai sea route, saying that once the canal was opened for traffic, warships of other countries could not be stopped from moving on the route.

He said Ram Setu symbolised India'a golden heritage. The canal could be developed at a lesser cost even without demolishing the Ramar bridge, he added.

Dr Togadia said the VHP had appealed the Hindus to observe 'Upwas' on Amavasya day on August 12 to protest against the demolition. He also appealed them to pledge to protect the Ram Setu by tying a band 'Raksha Sutra' on Rakshabandhan day.

Various issues were linked with Ram Setu, while Ram temple issue was purely religious he added.
