TN: Panchayat chief convicted in assault case

Kancheepuram, July 14: A local court sentenced 12 persons, including an arrack dealer and a panchayat chief, to five years imprisonment in connection with an assault case.

Delivering the verdict last evening, Fast Track Court Judge R Dhandapani sentenced arrack dealer Sridhar who was also the PMK Councillor of the Kancheepuram Panchayat Union, Tiruparuthikundram Panchayat President Venkatesan and ten others to five years imprisonment and ordered each to pay a fineof Rs 1,000.

One of the accused, Chakravarthy, died during the pendency of the proceedings.

On January six, 2002, Sridhar and his associates attacked the supporters of Anti-illict Arrack Association President Shanmugam inflicting grievous injuries to eight of them during a funeral procession.

Sridhar was in news last year when he attempted to enter the Chennai Airport illegaly. He was later released after questioning by the police.
