Srinagar, July 13: Life in Kashmir valley was today paralysed owing to a one-day complete strike called by separatist organisations to mark the Martyrs day.

On this day in 1931 Dogra police killed 22 Kashmiris outside the central jail here. A large number of people had gathered outside the prison where a number of Kashmiri freedom fighters were detained.

Shops and business establishments were closed with traffic off the roads.

However, government offices, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed on account of a public holiday.

The strike call was given by both the factions of the Hurriyat Conference (HC) and other separatist organisations, saying that the goal of the martyrs still remained unfulfilled.

A report from Baramulla said life was crippled in almost all major towns in the north Kashmir where shops and other business establishments were closed with traffic off the roads.

Security forces and state police personnel were deployed to thwart any militant attempt.

Similar reports were also received from south and central Kashmir towns.
