Dalai Lama's birthday celebrated in Kashmir
Srinagar, July 10: Several functions were organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Gandhian Workers Society at various places in the valley to celebrate the 72nd birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader and the Nobel peace prize winner, the Dalai Lama.
Special functions were held at Sheriefabad, Kashmir University and other places. Hundreds of women and children took part in the celebrations at Apna Ghar, a special home at Indira Nagar here.
Speaking on the occasion, noted Gandhian S P Varma lauded the role played by the toward international peace and inter-faith understanding.
''Like Mahatma Gandhi, he too is spearheading the cause of non violence and truth across the world and that is why these values are fast accepted despite conflicts and misunderstandings,'' he said.
Mr Varma also hailed the United Nations for declaring Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on October two this year as non violence day throughout the world.
He also asked the local Kashmiri Gandhian workers to prepare themselves for playing a greater role in world peace by following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi.
