Port Blair, July 9: The Postal Department in this remote archipelago has increased the supply of 'Meghdoot Post Cards' to provide cost-effective communication to the general public, officials said today.

The cost of each postcard is only 25 paise and it carried colourful pictures of the scenic beauty, geographical uniqueness and historical importance of the islands. ''These postcards act as ambassadors wherever they will go,'' Madhumita Das, the Director of India Post told sources today in Port Blair.

''A new hobby of posting these colourful postcards to friends and collecting Meghdoot postcards on various themes is emerging among students of the islands,'' she added.

India Post introduced Meghdoot Post Card on September 2, 2002.

Meghdoot is priced at 25 paise which is half the cost of the regular post card. Meghdoot, literally meaning the cloud-messenger, is the title of a play in Sanskrit penned by Kalidasa. Meghdoot is also the name of an award that India Post presents for meritorious services to its employees annually.
