Union Ministry grant Rs 242 lakhs aid to Manipur

Imphal, July 03: The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment sanctioned a sum of Rs 242.37 lakhs to 50 NGOs of Manipur during the year 2006-07 for aged persons and victims of drug abuse under its Social Defence Division, Manipur Information Centre officials said.

The ministry was entrusted with the welfare, social justice and empowerment of disadvantaged and marginalized section of the society viz. Scheduled Caste, Backward Classes, Persons with Disabilities, aged Persons and Victims of Drug Abuse, The Joint director of the Centre, Meghachandra Kongbam said a sum of Rs 90,93,000 was sanctioned to 31 NGOs in Manipur during the year for establishing and maintaining old age homes (OAHs), day care centers (DCCs), mobile medicare units (MMUs) and to provide non-institutional services to older persons.

Out of 31 NGOs, 18 would serve in Thoubal District, seven in Imphal West, two each in Imphal East and Chandel, and one each in Tamenglong.
