Chennai, June 11: Tamil Nadu CPI(M) Secretary N Varadarajan today criticised former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and others for their move to form a Third Front and said their efforts would prove useless.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Varadarajan pointed out that political fronts were formed on policies and ideologies whereas the proposed move by Ms Jayalalithaa and others lacked any policy.

Referring to the Kodanadu Estate controversy in which Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and AIADMK Supremo Ms Jayalalithaa clashed by making statements against each other, Mr Varadarajan said if persons like Ms Jayalaithaa and her personal aide Sasikala were able to acquire 800 acre estate in a prime location of the hilly region of Udhagamandalam, there were definitely some loopholes in the existing laws which should be plugged first.

To a question, he said as per the 2001 census, Dalit population in Tamil Nadu had gone up sharply and wanted the existing 18 per cent resevation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe be increased to at least 20 per cent.

He said the Arundadiyar community (cobblers) should be provided exclusive reservation within the Dalit quota. As they were suffering a lot, the government should form a separate welfare board for them.

In support of the community's long pending demands, the party would be undertaking a rally in the city tomorrow.
